Create a new wiki . Go to http://www.wikispaces.com
Name the wiki "yourlastname603" (no spaces, and preferably all lower case; e.g., smyth603)
I recommend that you set your wiki page as a "Basic Website" rather than a "Classroom."
Go to Settings -> General and select Basic Website
It will be easier to manage that way.
Also, you should share your wiki with others by doing the following:
On your wiki page, click on Manage Wiki
Then, under People, click Permissions.
Select Protected so that "Everyone can view pages, but only members of this wiki can edit pages."
On your wiki home page, you should edit the first default page to create your generic home page with your photo and introduction. Delete the existing text on the page that begins "Welcome to your new wiki..." and enter your introduction information. Due by midnight on August 24.Let me know when you have completed this task and send me the URL.
1. Please state your name (indicate your USC name if it is different).
2. Indicate your student status (i.e., Masters program, Doctoral or other program, Non-degree seeking) and list other courses you are enrolled in this semester.
3. If you are in a degree program, what are you planning to do with your degree? If not, are you considering applying for an advanced degree program? What academic degrees have you already earned?
4. Please describe your current job(s) and your past work experience, especially jobs you’ve had that involve training, instruction, or technology.
5. Please tell us something else about yourself: hobbies, interests, a silly story, or whatever you would like to share.
6. Upload a picture of you into the body of the text. It should be a close head shot of you only.
Click the File icon ->Upload file ->Insert file.
7. Separately, create a video introduction and embed it on your home page and/or insert a link to your video.
You may use YouTube (log on to YouTube, click Upload, enter information, then click "Record from Webcam" or "Upload from Mobile") or one of several other online video recording programs. You'll need to explore this on your own. You'll also need a webcam and microphone attached to your computer - unless you use a Macintosh [it's already built-in].
- or -
Create an audio introduction. You may use Voicethread, or any podcasting tool. Include your picture on VoiceThread or the podcast!
- or -
You may create a narrated slideshow about your life.
[Please: Do not just read your written introduction. Be natural and conversational!]
Remember: It is necessary that you set Permissions on your wikispaces account as "Protected" (instead of "Private") so that others may see your pages (see instruction above).
This introductory activity, which is for 5 points, is designed 1) to help build our learning community; 2) to help familiarize you with various audio and video recording tools and techniques for publishing audio and video.
Hey - want to see some examples of the video introductions?
